A Life built on faith and friendship

“Make good foundations in family and healthy relationships. Invest yourself into good education. Be honest and kind to others and always put your faith first as this is the best start and end to life. Respect everyone like you would like to be respected. Be part of your community in a positive way”

Muhammad Ashraf’s story is one of courage and grace. Born in 1947 in Dak Chibban near Jhelum, Pakistan, he arrived in Nelson, Lancashire, at the age of 17 – full of uncertainty, yet guided by hope. The early days were tough. The cold, the unfamiliar food, the rhythm of life in England all posed challenges. Language was the hardest barrier, making even simple tasks daunting. Shared accommodation with workers on rotating shifts left little privacy or rest. Yet Mr Ashraf persevered, holding tight to the companionship of his brother and the small circle of men who shared his journey.

He began his working life in a cotton factory, many of his co-workers spoke his language, and together they built a sense of home. His career soon expanded to a pharmaceutical company and then to Silentnight Bedding, where he spent sixteen years learning new skills and building friendships across cultures. Later, he co-founded a footwear business, embracing entrepreneurship with pride. His most beloved role was as a taxi driver. A job that connected him deeply to his community creating lifelong friendships.

Faith and service have been the constants in Mr Ashraf’s life. As a devoted member of his local mosque, he opened and closed its doors daily, led prayers when needed, and distributed food parcels to those in need. Even after suffering a stroke, his heart remains with his congregation, missing the warmth of togetherness that shaped so much of his identity.

Ashraf’s reflections are grounded in gratitude and sincerity, his message to future generations.

“Make good foundations in family and healthy relationships. Invest yourself into good education. Be honest and kind to others and always put your faith first as this is the best start and end to life. Respect everyone like you would like to be respected. Be part of your community in a positive way.”
