An artist, educator & community leader
“Follow your heart and passion, but be practical to make it a reality. Map your journey and set your goals. Success lies in the time and commitment you give. Never fear failure, it shapes your path to success. Life is time, and time is a gift.”
Shahida Ahmed was born on Wilkinson Street in Nelson to parents who migrated from Pakistan and made the UK their home. As the fourth of nine siblings, all born in the UK, she was raised in a lively household rooted in culture, faith, and community.
Shahida attended Marsden Primary and Edge End High School, where she remembers a strong sense of community and inclusion. Although one of only a few Pakistani students at the time, she recalls a positive school experience filled with friendship, respect, and shared learning. English was picked up naturally at school, while Punjabi and Urdu were spoken at home. Her early life was a blend of cultural richness and educational opportunity, without a strong sense of difference or division.
Over the years, Shahida has pursued a diverse and impactful career – working in archives, nursing care, education, the arts, media, and community development. She has held roles as a teacher, artist, radio host, TV presenter, project manager, and active volunteer. Her contributions to the arts have earned her national recognition, including the Alhambra Award for Excellence in Art and an invitation to 10 Downing Street in honour of her achievements. She made history as the first female Muslim elected to Nelson Town Council, later serving as Vice Chair, and even interviewed Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan for a television programme.
As an artist, Shahida’s work has been showcased around the world. Her pieces are featured in the Islamic Art Museum in Melbourne, the VIP Lounge at Dubai Airport, and private collections in Qatar and beyond. Her art is also proudly displayed in public spaces across the UK. Among her proudest moments is meeting King Charles III and being recognised internationally for her creative work.
Alongside her personal and professional achievements, Shahida has built a successful property portfolio and raised three children as a single parent – balancing resilience with ambition. She is also the founder of several local initiatives, including the Hoopoe Club and Raang Community Arts all of which support cultural expression and community connection.
When asked what message she would share with future generations, Shahida says:
“Follow your heart and passion, but be practical to make it a reality. Map your journey and set your goals. Success lies in the time and commitment you give. Never fear failure, it shapes your path to success. Life is time, and time is a gift.”
