The Journey of Perseverance

The future is education. Never give up. You can buy jewels, you can buy cars and houses, but they can all be taken from you in an instant. If you have knowledge, that knowledge is yours. You can start again anywhere.”

When 19 year old Ehtesham Ul-Haq boarded his first flight from Pakistan to England, embarking on a dream he had only seen in photographs. The dream of a new life and a bride he had never met in person. It was a journey filled with uncertainty, marked by the innocence of youth and the courage of adventure. After an unexpected mix-up at Heathrow Airport, he found himself spending the night with strangers in Blackburn who, by fortune and kindness, reunited him with his future wife the next day. It was an unconventional beginning to what would become a long and steadfast life in Nelson.

The early years were challenging. Ehtesham spoke little English, relying on his wife to translate. Work was hard to come by but his determination never wavered. After a year and a half of searching, he secured a position at Smith & Nephew, where he learned the value of patience and persistence. Soon after, he began driving taxisa career that would span nearly forty years and countless journeys across Pendle, Burnley, and Manchester.

For Ehtesham, taxi driving was never just about earning a living, it was about connection. Through thousands of conversations and miles travelled, he built relationships, observed lives, and supported his family. His greatest pride lies not in possessions, but in the lives he’s nurtured: his wife, who became an ESOL teacher; his children, who graduated from university; and his grandchildren, whose laughter now fills his home.

Though ill health has brought retirement, Ehtesham’s spirit remains unbroken. His outlook on life is deeply philosophical, his message to future generations:

The future is education. Never give up. You can buy jewels, you can buy cars and houses, but they can all be taken from you in an instant. If you have knowledge, that knowledge is yours. You can start again anywhere.
